BOWEN BLADES are handmade hunting knives for the demanding outdoorsman that wants a knife that stays hair cutting sharp after much use. This performance is achieved by using tough, long wearing D-2 die steel, cryogenically hardened to 60-62 on the Rockwell C Scale. This hardness makes them just below the hardness of good files without being too brittle. D-2 has long been known as one of the best steels for high production metal cutting dies. It is not normally found in factory knives because it causes too much wear to the stamping dies.
The handles have a good feel or grip. This is to be expected as they are contoured to fit the natural shape of the hand. A warm piece of wax was squeezed to give the model. The finger grooves left in the model made the knife too awkward when turned over to gut an animal or to hold the knife in any position but a direct squeeze. These obstacles were overcome by eliminating most of the finger grooves. The final outcome was a handle shape that is amazingly comfortable and versatile. The natural fit of these handles allows for less fatigue from cramping and restricted circulation when using your knife for extended periods, especially during cold weather. Handles are fastened to the full-tang with special brass bolts and two-ton epoxy.
The hunting knives have a concaved area in the blade near the handle. This feature gives a mechanical advantage when the object being cut lies in this area and the knife is drawn across. The reason is this: by drawing the ramped portion of the blade across the area being cut, a heavier pressure is applied to the cutting edge than that which is found by drawing a straight bladed knife across an object with the same pressure. This is of special value when cutting through the rib cage of a large animal.
The sheaths are made from 8½-9 oz. select grade vegetable tanned English shoulders. As far as we know this is the best. The vegetable tanning process does not leave an acid residue that could stain the knife. Each sheath is wet formed to fit each knife which gives a snug fit. They are then dyed brown and given a water repellent finish. The sheaths are permanently joined with brass cobbling nails. Cobbling nails make the sheaths safer by making them less apt to be cut through the welt. Also, they do not rot or wear through.

Browning 001 Living History Series - Liberty Knife
$1,000.00
In the troubled years of the American Revolution, men wanted by the Crown of Great Britain for treason were forced to gather out-of-doors to avoid detection–and execution. They often designated trees as the location of their meetings. These became known as “Liberty Trees. If the red coats found the tree, but no colonial “traitors,” they often vented their wrath by felling the tree in hopes that they could dampen the spirit of freedom by toppling the magnificent witnesses to so many patriotic plans. A few of the Liberty Trees survived the axe and the slow passage of years. The wood in the handle of this knife is from a tree that survived all but a hurricane's fury in Annapolis, Maryland. The blade is reminiscent of designs commonly found in the hands of our colonial forefathers. The handle is embellished with two gold stars in memory of patriotic ideals that live today in those who love this land.
Browning 002 Living History Series - Alamo Knife
$1,000.00
Show me someone in America that hasn't heard of the famous Bowie knife, and I'll show you someone that is dead to the world of knives. Jim Bowie was a Louisiana man that once found himself in a gunfight armed only with a knife. Fortunately, the other guy missed, and Bowie lived to play his part in a gallant, but ultimately hopeless defense of the Alamo in 1836. This knife is a replica of the design that was made famous during that period in our history. The wood in the handle comes from a live oak that grew on the grounds of the Alamo itself. For more than a century, it shaded visitors to that hallowed place, eventually dying of age. It is graced by a single gold star on each side that represents the fame of the state of Texas.
Browning 005 Living History Series - Crazy Horse Knife
$1,000.00
"Tashunka Witko," Oglala Lakota Sioux Warrior. Crazy Horse was born around 1845 on the Republican River that traces the Nebraska-Kansas border. He was raised with tribal traditions of generosity, courage and self-denial. He ordered the attack on Lt. Col. George A. Custer's Seventh Cavalry and never surrendered the lands claimed by his people. When asked where were his lands, he replied, "My lands are where my dead lie buried." The Crazy Horse knife sports a handle made of wood from a grove of aspen trees, which grew on the sacred Pine Ridge Reservation land in southern Nebraska. The Aspen is revered by the Sioux Nation as the "Tree of Life." The blade is made from knapped obsidian, a hard volcanic glass. Its color is variegated rust black and is affixed to the hilt with leather strips. Horsehair tassels dangle from brass cones, threaded with bone beads lashed to the leather binding. Four brass tacks represent the four seasons. The fringed buckskin sheath is brain-tanned, hand-made and beaded with a familiar Sioux pattern. A certificate of authenticity is included. 1,847 knives — commemorating the year Crazy Horse was born — will be produced.
