Froe -
The Gränsfors Froe is used to split wood very finely, for example when making shingles for a roof. The wood to be split is placed under the edge. The user steadies the tool with one hand on the vertical handle and strikes the blade with a mallet using the other hand. The handle is removable, making the Froe easy to transport.. This hand-forged Swedish froe has a 12″ steel blade fitted with an 18″ hickory handle. In use, the thick, blunt blade is driven into the stock with heavy wooden maul or mallet, and the handle is pulled or pushed as needed to direct the split’s runout. The handle is removable, making the Froe easy to transport. Sheath available separately. Weight: 2.6 lbs.
Produced by highly skilled blacksmiths, Gränsfors Bruk axes are forged from a special Swedish steel developed for axes. The proof of their forging prowess is such that no supplementary work (grinding or painting), that would hide imperfections and mistakes, is necessary. The blades are hardened and tempered to the correct toughness for maximum performance. The handles are made from first quality American hickory, properly fitted and wedged to the axe head, that are then oiled and provided with a grain-leather cover. All steps in production are carefully tested and checked. When finished, the smith stamps each head with the company stamp and his initials as a testament to his skill and pride.
