Manix2 - Carbon Fiber / CPM 154 & S90V
At times it seems like Spyderco is the king of Sprint Runs. Offering short-term, limited number releases, Sprints do two things. They resurrect a previously discontinued classics you may have owned and adored years before and they allow knife aficionados fond of an existing model to experience their favorite knife with a different or unique blade steel or handle material. These releases happen several times per year.
This limited edition Sprint Run of Spyderco’s best-selling Manix 2 features an extraordinary CPM S90V/CPM 154 composite steel blade. This remarkable steel was created by Crucible and is the result of an extremely advanced manufacturing process in which a plate of precision-ground CPM S90V steel is encapsulated in CPM 154 powder. The canister containing these steels is then sealed in a vacuum and subjected to extreme heat and pressure to forge weld the CPM 154 to the CPM S90V, creating a three-layer composite steel slab.
This extraordinary manufacturing method uses specialized equipment and welding techniques primarily reserved for the manufacture of high-performance aircraft engine parts that are held to extremely rigorous quality standards. In a finished knife blade, the lines where the steel layers meet are clearly visible, adding greatly to the knife’s aesthetics. Textured peel-ply carbon fiber handle scales add further distinction to this elite Sprint Run. True to the original, the Manix2 Sprint has a Ball Bearing Lock which is a hardened free-floating ball bearing contained in a custom hi-tech polymer cage. The round ball bearing allows the lock to self-adjust across a large surface, smoothly and consistently locking-up with solid confidence. Evolving over time, the Ball Bearing Lock’s strength withstands hard work with a secure, versatile and comfortable grip. Ergonomics are peerless in this design. It is full flat ground with aggressive jimping above a super-sized 14mm Spyderco Round Hole. The Jimping doesn’t stop there. With full skeletonized steel liners, the jimping extends beyond the handle scales scalloping areas of the handle’s perimeter. This one is not slipping out of your hand and works like clockwork with gloves on. The liners pull double purpose by adding rigidly and lightweight strength to the handle. A three-screw clip is left/right-hand carry, positioned for comfort and deep pocket carry. The knife also has a large lanyard pipe to accept and protect various types of cord or thong attachments.
