As a continuation of Victorinox’s partnership with Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), they wanted to extend the program this year to allow warriors who are not artists to collaborate on new designs. Victorinox has partnered with the United States Veterans’ Artists Alliance (USVAA) and matched each warrior with a veteran artist to translate the warriors’ stories into a design. Launching Veterans Day, November 11th, these two powerful designs will be specially packaged in a gift box that features a beautifully designed belly band highlighting the collection.
Donna Pratt joined the Army during the Gulf War and after an eight-year break, rejoined after 9/11. During her time in Iraq she obtained multiple injuries, which required multiple surgeries to repair the damaged tendons, torn ligaments, fractured bones in her feet and ankles. After two years in a wheelchair, Donna was feeling hopeless. A friend invited her to attend a wheelchair basketball camp. It was then that she felt reborn and began to pursue adaptive sports opportunities. Today Donna still deals with pain in her ankles, knees and back, but she does not allow this to slow her down. She says, “I don’t adapt to life. I make life adapt to me.”
Donna Pratt was partnered with Jamie Peterson, a member of the USVAA, to translate her story onto a knife. The inspiration behind the design relates to how Donna was “reborn” when she found adaptive sports. She realized that just because she was injured didn’t mean that life needed to stop. Instead of adapting to life, she makes life adapt to her. Today, Donna is a certified archery instructor and shares her experiences to help other injured warriors.
The mission of Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) is to honor and empower Wounded Warriors. WWP’s purpose is to raise awareness and to enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members, to help injured servicemen and women aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs.
