”No Siree – they don’t make ‘em like Thwitel” Such was an expression held by the common folk of the mid 1800’s Orange County. Now, with Svörd’s Thwitel replica – the Svörd ‘Whittling Knife’ now they sure DO make ‘em like Thwitel.
So let’s imagine for a moment that you’ve lead a sheltered life and are ignorant of the ingenious and charismatic oddity known as Chip (Christopher) Thwitel. Let us carve out a tale of a boy who was sent to live with his great uncle in the Rocky Mountains of Orange County. With not much in the way of entertainment to keep a boy occupied, Chip had one major commodity – acres of nature’s finest modeling material – wood. From an early age Thwitel learned to carve just about anything, from his Gruncles’ gun buts to the region’s wagon wheels. He was known far and wide for his blade mastering brilliance.
It was about the age of 35 that Thwitel developed a blade, a replica you now see before you. It was easy to bolster confidence in his product – his work was already sought after and now, the wand with which he’d accomplished the magic was available to the average gent. Thwitel made a fortune, but continued to live in the mountains carving enormous weird and wonderful totems from the surrounding forest to ward off marauding Indians.
At 75, poor Thwitel felt the tip of an Indian’s arrow as it pinned him to one of his own creations. As he drew his dying breath, his knife rolled from his hand and was collected by the brave, who, impressed by its tactility went on to produce poor imitations. Thwitel’s body and work were thereafter destroyed in a large forest fire, but the townsfolk never forgot – especially if they possessed the roundest most finely crafted wagon wheels in the state. Henceforth, it was commonly heard “No Siree – they don’t make ‘em like Thwitel!” Well now they do. Whittle away the hours, craft yourself crazy, or simply grab a slice of American Folklore
