Military Model – 52100 / Peel-Ply Carbon Fiber

Spyderco regularly offers short-term, limited number releases called Sprint Runs. Sprint Runs allow knife enthusiasts to experience their favorite knife model with a different or unique blade steel, handle material or color. The Spyderco Military Model lends itself to variation making it an ideal candidate for a Sprint Run.

This extraordinary Sprint Run of the iconic Military Model features a blade ground from 52100 tool steel—a deep hardening, extremely tough tool steel that is best known for its use in ball and roller bearings. It has a good amount of carbon (0.98 – 1.10) and very few other alloys. Ball bearing steels usually have to withstand a great deal of force in a very small area. Traditionally, ball bearing steels make good edge steels because an edge also has to withstand much force in a small area. 52100 serves that function well. Oil quenched and drawn to Rc 62, it is a difficult steel to heat treat. A very fine molecular structure permits very sharp edges, even at thin angles. A traditional favorite of bladesmiths for forged knives, 52100 is prized for its toughness, wear resistance, and strength. Please note, however, that it is not a stainless steel and must therefore be properly maintained to prevent corrosion.

The C36CFP52100 Military Sprint has a conventional Military Model blade-shape made of 52100 that is PlainEdge and ground-flat with an oversized blade hole. Machined into the spine and choil is jimping that prevents the knife slipping forward or backward in the hand while forcefully cutting or sawing.

The handle of this unique knife features peel-ply textured carbon fiber scales that are remarkably lightweight, yet incredibly strong. Nested within these scales are skeletonized stainless steel liners that form the foundation of the knife’s sturdy Linerlock mechanism and anchor its pocket clip, which is configured for right-side, tip-down carry. For users who enjoy accessorizing their knives with lanyards or fobs, the handle also includes a generously sized lined lanyard hole.

Open back-spacers create a gap exposing the folder’s inner workings and make maintenance and cleaning effortless while ensuring reliable performance even in the dirtiest, harshest environments
